At Rocky Mountain Dental Partners (RMDP) we are committed to giving you the best dental care possible and providing a remedy for any dental malady. Occasionally, you may have an infected tooth, making a root canal advisable to prevent the spread of infection. RMDP provides the some of the most advanced technologies available in the field of endodontics.
What is Endodontics?
Endodontics is a specialty that deals with diseases of the dental pulp and its supporting structures. Dental pulp is the tissue inside the tooth consisting of the nerve, blood vessels, and lymphatics.
What is the treatment?
To cure the infection and save the tooth, your RMDP endodondist will remove the infected pulp tissue, fill the cavity with an inert material, and seal the opening. After a root canal, the tooth is essentially hollow and likely to break; therefore, the tooth must be fitted with a crown after a root canal.
Why would I need Endodontic treatment?
Endodontic treatment is necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected. The most common reasons for inflammation or infection are deep cavities, repeated dental procedures, or cracks. If pulp inflammation is left untreated, it can lead to an abscess.
What are the signs and symptoms?
Indications for treatment include prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, discoloration of the tooth, swelling or tenderness of the tooth or gums. Sometimes there are no symptoms.
Is the process painful?
Treatments are performed under local anesthesia so the patient does not feel any pain during the procedure. Modern technology has made root canals no more uncomfortable than applying a filling. Occasionally we will even have patients fall asleep during the procedure.
Is a root canal safe?
Root canal treatment is a safe procedure with a high success rate. A root canal is one of the most common dental procedures performed, well over 14 million every year. There is no link to illness from endodontically-treated teeth. Actually, root canal procedures remove infection that may cause illness.
Is a root canal beneficial?
A root canal can save your natural teeth and prevent the need for dental implants or bridges. Pulling a tooth creates a need for procedures and tooth replacements that are much more expensive than a root canal. More importantly, root canal treatments conserve healthy tooth structure. Natural teeth are usually stronger and more functional than a prosthetic.
How much will the procedure cost?
The cost varies depending on how complex the problem is and which tooth is affected. Most dental insurance policies provide some coverage for endodontic treatment. Generally, endodontic treatment and restoration of the natural tooth are less expensive than having the tooth extracted and replaced by a bridge or a dental implant.
